Lakes of Pakistan
By: Amna Safdar
Pakistan is home to several natural and man made lakes and
reservoirs. The largest lake in Pakistan is the Man-char Lake, which is also the
largest lake in South Asia. The lake is spread over an area of over 100 square
miles. The highest lake in Pakistan is the Rush Lake, which is also the 25th
highest lake is the world at an altitude of over 4,700 meters. The second
highest lake in Pakistan is the Karambar Lake, which at an altitude of 4,272
meters, is the 31st highest lake in the world.
Pakistan’s northern mountainous regions of Karakorum
Himalaya and Hindukush are bestowed upon some of most picturesque high altitude
lakes in the world. These consist of several glacial, kettle and valley bottom
lakes ranging from 2500m to 4600m in altitude. These high altitude lakes are
important source of fresh water and most importantly they support a number of animal,
birds, fish and plant species. These scenic lakes are also important source of
tourism. However most of these resources are not under any kind of protection
or management, resulting in degradation of its rich flora and fauna.
Famous
Lakes Of Pakistan
(1) Katpana Lake
. (2)Sadpara Lake
Satpara
Lake is a natural lake near Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, which supplies
water to Skardu Valley. It is fed by the Satpara Stream.
Satpara Lake is situated at an elevation of 2,636 meters
(8,650 ft) above sea level and is spread over an area of 2.5 km².Since 2003, Satpara Dam is being constructed downstream of
the lake and, upon completion, will enlarge the size of Satpara Lake.
(3)Attaabad Lake
Attabad Lake, Gojal, also known as Gojal Lake, is a lake in
the Gojal Valley of northern Pakistan created in January 2010 by alandslide
dam.
The lake was formed due to a massive landslide at Attabad
village in Gilgit-Baltistan, 9 miles (14 km) upstream (east) of Karimabadthat
occurred on January 4, 2010.[5] The landslide killed twenty people and blocked
the flow of the Hunza River for five months. The lake flooding has displaced
6,000 people from upstream villages, stranded (from land transportation routes)
a further 25,000, and inundated over 12 miles (19 km) of the Karakoram Highway.
The lake reached 13 miles (21 km) long and over 100 metres in depth by the
first week of June 2010 when it began flowing over the landslide dam,
completely submerging lower Shishkat and partly flooding Gulmit. The
subdivision of Gojal has the greatest number of flooded buildings, over 170
houses and 120 shops.
(4)Kachura Lakes
The Kachura Lakes are two lakes in the Skardu District of
Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan. The lakes, at 2,500 metres (8,200 ft) in
elevation, are Upper Kachura Lake and Lower Kachura Lake. The latter is also
known as Shangrila Lake and is within a tourist resort named Shangrila Resort
outside the town of Skardu.
The lakes are in the Karakoram mountain range of the western
Himalayas, the greater Kashmir region, and in the Indus River basin.

Tourism in Pakistan

It can be hard to remember now, but there was a time when
Pakistan was a prime tourist destination. In the 1960s and 1970s, we were part
of the vaunted hippie trail when backpackers from Europe would cross the Khyber
Pass and make their way through Peshawar, Chitral and Karachi. Now, as ranked
by the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index, we are 122 out of 140 countries for
tourism. That is actually an improvement of three ranking points from last year
but if this is a victory for us, it is purely a pyrrhic one. There are many
reasons for the decline in tourism but none looms larger than the insecurity
that plagues the country. From Kashmir to the Northern Areas and from Fata to
Swat, it simply isn't safe for foreigners to come
and experience the best the country has to offer.
The security
issue would bedevil any country trying to boost tourism but our governments
over the years have scarcely helped matters. Many of our museums lie virtually
empty because our heritage has been plundered by private collectors who are
easily able to smuggle items out of the country or display them at home. The
ancient civilizations of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa have not received the
government attention they should and so are crumbling before our very eyes. It
took the government over 10 years to submit a list of heritage sites to Unesco
so that it could receive funding for maintenance and upkeep. Even then, it left
out many Mughal palaces, forts and tombs. A separate tourism ministry was
established in 2004 to promote tourism in the country but nearly 10 years in,
it is safe to say that it hasn’t been a success at all.
Of course,
as long as most foreign countries advise their citizens not to travel to
Pakistan, there is little we can do to boost tourism. When even cultural
activities and sporting events can no longer attract foreigners, we are clearly
in trouble. But what we should be doing is promoting domestic tourism and
ensuring that tourist sites are taken care of so that if the security situation
does improve we are in a better position to cash in.

Proposal
PROPOSAL
FOR BLOG
INTRODUCTION
My topic for blog is Tourism which includes the introduction
of northern areas of Pakistan.
About Pakistan
Situated
between Central and Southern Asia, Pakistan stretches from the golden beaches
of the Arabian Sea to the formidably high mountains of Central Asia. With a
population of nearly 130 million people, it is three times the size of Great
Britain (covering an area of 891,940 sq. km) and is bordered by China, Iran,
Afghanistan and India.
Northern Areas of Pakistan
Northern
Areas of Pakistan,
spread over 72,496 sq. km are as fascinating as its southern region. Amidst
towering snow-clad peaks with heights varying from 1,000 m to 8,000 meters, the
regions of Gilgit, Hunza,
Baltistan and Shangri-La.
The cultural patterns of these regions are as interesting as its geography. The
people with typical costumes, folk dances, music and sports like polo and
buzkashi, provide the traveller an unforgettable experience.
Out
of 14 over 8,000 meters high peaks on earth, 4 occupy an amphitheater at
the head of Baltoro glacier in the Karakoram
rangein Northern Pakistan. These are; K-2 or Mount Godowin Austin (8,611 m,
world's second highest), Gasherbrum-I (8,068 m), Broad
Peak (8,047 m) and Gasherbrum-II (8,035 m).
There
is yet another which is equally great, Nanga Parbat (8,126 m), located at the western most
end of the Himalayas. In addition
to these mountains, there are 68 peaks over 7,000 m and hundreds others
of over 6,000 meters.
The Northern Pakistan has
some of the longest glaciers outside Polar region; Siachen (72 km), Hispar (61 km), Biafo (60 km), Baltoro(60
km) and Batura (64 km).

Significance
Tourism plays an
important role in the economy of any country. Pakistan is a country rich with
beautiful valleys but tourism is not encouraged here. Pakistan can earn large
amount of National Income by tourism but our government authorities always show
negligence for this regard. Tourism is affected when Terrorism war Is started
in Pakistan. Foreigners hesitate to come here and visit northern areas. Through
this blog I would show the peaceful side and I’ll convey a positive approach
among readers about Pakistan.
